The Art I chose to reflect me...

Social Description!

The Social Description Art category is a subcategory of social function. This category can be summarized as looking for a description of a common event and noting social statements being made.

I chose Social description as one of the categories that best describes my life. I am very interested in the world around me. I like to meet new people, learn facts about different cultures, and observe people. A lot of the works of art that we saw under this category had hidden meanings behind everyday images. I enjoy searching for the hidden meanings and uncovering the message the artist was trying to portray.

My favorite works of Social Description Art

This work of art is entitled, American Gothic, by Grant Wood in 1930's. This work of art signifies the tradition roles of men and women, as well as the emphasis on manual labor at this time.

This is called Sunday Afternoon on the Island of la Grande Jatte, it was painted by George Seurat. I love this piece of art for a couple of reasons, I was first exposed to this piece of art when I saw Ferris Bueller's Day Off. I went to the art museum in Chicago and did the same thing the character Cameron does in the movie. The use of the dots to make a big picture is fascinating. I also went to Spain when I was in High School. We went to this park with a canoe rental. Watching the people enjoy life with their loved ones in the canoes and throughout the park was both fascinating and interesting.

Edward Hooper's Nighthawks, is another great example of social description. This work was based on the term 'nightowls'. The piece features a couple and a lone man in a diner late at night in New York City. The theme of the piece is that the more people you are surrounded by, the more lonely you feel.

I enjoy photography and capturing fun social moments of my life. These are some 'examples' of my interpretation of Social Description. These are photographs I've taken from the social scene at UW-LaCrosse. I would say the statement being made in these photos is that you can get through the hard and confusing times in your life, if you've got friends by your side.
